An early morning shooting on the Texas Tech University campus in Lubbock, Texas, has left one suspect dead and two campus police officers injured. The incident occurred around 12:45 a.m. on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, in a parking lot near Jones AT&T Stadium.

According to the Texas Tech Police Department, officers were investigating a suspicious vehicle parked in an unauthorized area with its door open. As officers approached, the suspect produced a firearm and opened fire, injuring both officers. The officers returned fire, fatally striking the suspect at the scene.

Both officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to University Medical Center. One officer has since been released, while the other remains hospitalized in stable condition.

The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was not affiliated with the university. The Texas Municipal Police Association described the incident as an “ambush” and commended the officers for their swift response.

FOX 4 News Dallas-Fort Worth has the latest:

One officer has been released from the hospital and the other is still getting treatment for his injuries.

The Lubbock Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit is investigating the officer-involved shooting.

Unfortunately, as FOX 4 notes, this isn’t the first campus-related shooting in Lubbock.

On October 9, 2017, Texas Tech Police Officer Floyd East Junior was shot and killed inside the university’s police department. A student, Hollis Daniels III, was convicted of his murder. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

He is housed in the Byrd Unit located in Huntsville, Texas.

Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec says there was no wider danger to campus, praising officers for their swift response.
