Oklahoma State stunned the college football world by firing Mike Gundy after 21 seasons — despite him being the winningest coach in program history.

The move comes after a brutal 1–2 start to 2025, capped by a 69–3 blowout loss to Oregon and a home loss to Tulsa.

Gundy’s résumé is loaded — 170 wins, 18 straight winning seasons, eight 10-win years, 12 bowl victories. But even that wasn’t enough. Just one day before his ouster, he declared he was “100 percent” staying, with more than three years left on his deal.

Doug Meacham, offensive coordinator and former Cowboy, takes over as interim coach.

Speculation about the permanent job is already swirling: Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator and former OSU quarterback Zac Robinson is the early favorite, with Alex Golesh (head coach at South Florida), Jon Sumrall (head coach at Tulane), Collin Klein (offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Texas A&M), Andy Kotelnicki (offensive coordinator at Penn State), and Eric Bieniemy (running backs coach for the Chicago Bears) also in the mix.

The search points toward one thing: Oklahoma State wants fresh offensive energy, program ties, and someone who can steady the Cowboys fast.
